Song Review: Miley Cyrus Expresses a Desire to "Slide Away" from Relationship Turmoil on Latest Effort

Fresh off the release of her SHE IS COMING extended play, pop rebel Miley Cyrus touches on her recent publicized separation from husband Liam Hemsworth by sharing latest effort "Slide Away". Presumably off her upcoming second EP release of the year, SHE IS HERE, the track carries a 90s alternative pop/rock vibe and heartbreaking, personal lyrical content.

Produced by Mike WiLL Made-It and Andrew Wyatt, "Slide Away" is a devastating affair that finds Cyrus realizing that natural growth comes with some unfortunate changes. Comparing and contrasting the then vs. now, the artist comes to an understanding that turmoil and heartache are simply part of life.

Carried by guitars, and then delicate strings similar to "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve, the new release soars thanks to Cyrus' emotive vocal performance and songwriting that hits very close to home. "Move on, we're not 17, I'm not who I used to be, you say that everything changed, you're right, we're grown now," she bluntly sings on the hook, after references of whiskey, pills, and the destruction left by the Woolsey fires.

"Slide Away" is a mature reflection at what once was, paving way for a clearer picture at what can be. Instead of aggressive delivery and hip-hop beats, Cyrus and team are able to pair tragic circumstances with a snappy beat that should aid in some groovy heads nods as the tears fall. Referencing real-life relationship scenarios also helps the song deliver strong impact, instead of just keeping the meaning ambiguous.

While it's sad to hear of Cyrus and Hemsworth parting ways, "Slide Away" highlights maturity and amicability in that decision. It touches on the natural distancing of two people realizing the spark has vanished. Part painful, part optimistic, the release will surely serve as an important moment of healing for those listeners dealing with a similar situation. The song also becomes one of Cyrus' strongest releases to date.
