"I'm doing real well – a little better every day," the country legend tells PEOPLE. "I have a little bicycle in the back room I'm starting to exercise on and I'm going into the studio to see how my voice sounds."
Haggard also is headed back to the studio to record new material for a new album and has just penned a new song called "Hopes Are High" in honor of the new President Barrack Obama.
In separate, but equally encouraging news, Country Music Hall of Famer and Grand Ole Opry star Little Jimmy Dickens has been moved to an area rehabilitation center after surgery to repair a subdural hematoma. Dickens is alert and has been visited by friends including Pete Fisher, the Grand Ole Opry's Vice President and General Manager. Dickens does not anticipate a lengthy stay at the center, and is looking forward to getting back to the Opry stage.
