This article points at and discusses in depth what all religions have in common, such as miracles, virgin births, accurate prophecy, angel visits, as well as going into detail about what keeps them apart and fighting each other via misinformation, misunderstandings and false beliefs. Two beliefs that literalists commonly hold are explored in more depth.

LITERALIST BELIEF SYSTEM - DOES IT WORK? LITERALISTS BELIEVE IN FLAT, STATIONARY EARTH, WHICH IS AT CENTER OF UNIVERSE, WITH EVERYTHING REVOLVING AROUND IT

How many literalists would still claim today that the FLAT Earth is stationary in space, located exactly in the center of the entire known universe, and that the sun revolves around a stationary Earth, along with the entire cosmos? That is what the churches of Galileo's time taught and believed, because they were interpreting what the Bible said LITERALLY. Many people still believe this, because they also believe that every word in the Bile is true LITERALLY.

Wikipedia; "In the Catholic world prior to Galileo's conflict with the Church, the majority of educated people subscribed to the Aristotelian geocentric view that the earth was the center of the universe and that all heavenly bodies revolved around the Earth,[11] though Copernican theories were used to reform the calendar in 1582.[12],,,,At a meeting of the cardinals of the Inquisition on the following day, Pope Paul V instructed Bellarmine to deliver this result to Galileo, and to order him to abandon the Copernican opinions; should Galileo resist the decree, stronger action would be taken. 

On February 26, Galileo was called to Bellarmine's residence and ordered, to abstain completely from teaching or defending this doctrine and opinion or from discussing it... to abandon completely... the opinion that the sun stands still at the center of the world and the earth moves, and henceforth not to hold, teach, or defend it in any way whatever, either orally or in writing.

The Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a list of books banned by the Catholic Church. Following the Inquisition's 1616 judgment, the works of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and others advocating heliocentrism were banned.

Following the Inquisition's injunction against Galileo, the papal Master of the Sacred Palace ordered that Foscarini's Letter be banned, and Copernicus' De revolutionibus suspended until corrected. The papal Congregation of the Index preferred a stricter prohibition, and so with the Pope's approval, on March 5 the Congregation banned all books advocating the Copernican system, which it called "the false Pythagorean doctrine, altogether contrary to Holy Scripture."[3]

Francesco Ingoli, a consultor to the Holy Office, recommended that De revolutionibus be amended rather than banned due to its utility for calendrics. In 1618 the Congregation of the Index accepted his recommendation, and published their decision two years later, allowing a corrected version of Copernicus' book to be used. The uncorrected De revolutionibus remained on the Index of banned books until 1758.[38]

Galileo's works advocating Copernicanism were therefore banned, and his sentence prohibited him from "teaching, defending… or discussing" Copernicanism. In Germany, Kepler's works were also banned by the papal order.[39]

GALILEO WAS PUT ON TRIAL FOR DARING TO CHALLENGE THE FLAT, STATIONARY EARTH RELIGIOUS INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE

With the loss of many of his defenders in Rome because of Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Galileo was ordered to stand trial on suspicion of heresy in 1633, "for holding as true the false doctrine taught by some that the sun is the center of the world", against the 1616 condemnation, since "it was decided at the Holy Congregation [...] on 25 Feb 1616 that [...] the Holy Office would give you an injunction to abandon this doctrine, not to teach it to others, not to defend it, and not to treat of it; and that if you did not acquiesce in this injunction, you should be imprisoned".[44]

Galileo was interrogated while threatened with physical torture.[39] A panel of theologians, consisting of Melchior Inchofer, Agostino Oreggi and Zaccaria Pasqualigo, reported on the Dialogue. Their opinions were strongly argued in favour of the view that the Dialogue taught the Copernican theory.[45]

Galileo was found guilty, and the sentence of the Inquisition, issued on 22 June 1633,[46] was in three essential parts:

Galileo was found "vehemently suspect of heresy," namely of having held the opinions that the Sun lies motionless at the center of the universe, that the Earth is not at its centre and moves, and that one may hold and defend an opinion as probable after it has been declared contrary to Holy Scripture. He was required to "abjure, curse, and detest" those opinions.[47]

He was sentenced to formal imprisonment at the pleasure of the Inquisition.[48] On the following day this was commuted to house arrest, which he remained under for the rest of his life.

His offending Dialogue was banned; and in an action not announced at the trial, publication of any of his works was forbidden, including any he might write in the future.[49]

MANY LITERALISTS BELIEVE IN ARMAGEDDON, AND WANT TO HURRY IT UP, BY PUSHING THE NUCLEAR BUTTON

Many literalists believe a certain kind of interpretation of their chosen Holy Book that the end of the world is coming. Some literalists believe that a nuclear war is going to trigger someone coming back to save them, so they want to hurry it up and trigger the nuclear WWIII sooner rather than later. They are itching to push the button that will start WWIII, thus destroying all of the 'enemy', because it means that they will go to Heaven, right then and there. 

How is this any different from the fundamentalists in other religions, who also want to destroy all unbelieving enemies, so they can go to Heaven? 

Can all of these belief systems or faiths be 'right', and everyone else be wrong at the same time? 

Which belief or faith will God choose? 

How can they each be so convinced that they are all right, but at the same time, be totally convinced that everyone else is totally wrong, just like the early Church authorities were so sure that Galileo was so wrong about the Earth orbiting the sun?

In another direction, some literalists believe that every word in the Holy Book must be true, so punishment of those violating it is required, including the death penalty. 

Part of the issue around literalism is that it relies totally on 'experts' who are closer to God than the average person, who then pronounce the 'official' interpretation of a particular passage. The official interpretation usually comes from the Pope or his equivalent in other religions, and everyone else is expected to obey this black and white interpretation without any dissent or hesitation.

It used to be that the Bible was written in Latin and only Latin was spoken in church by the religious leaders, who were the only people who could talk with God. Everything cost money around God; birth, death, getting out of Hell, and attending church. Not much has changed, but now the Bible has been translated and everyone can both read the various Holy Books and talk to God themselves, without the help of a 'special' person who speaks to and for God. 


It also used to be that Kings led by DIVINE RIGHT, as they were seen as being the same as GOD, and every word that they uttered was GOD. Nothing that the KING ordered or said or decreed could be disagreed with or disobeyed, because the KING was GOD and the KING also had an official religion, so there was no freedom to worship or not worship via something of your own choosing, which is the reason for separation of church and state. Humanity is making progress, slowly but surely.


Now we elect human leaders, who are imperfect, corrupted and full of character flaws. They don't speak for God, so we toss them out of office and let someone else try for a couple years, instead of staying as KING for hundreds of years, and then passing on that title to their children and their children's children. 

Is absolute moralism and absolute punishment as it was practiced by kings and popes in the days of old still something that works today?

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT AND EQUALLY VALID WAYS TO INTERPRET ANY HOLY BOOK, INCLUDING THE BIBLE


The problem with this model of religion is that there are at least 9 equally valid ways to interpret any given passage in any Holy Book, in any religion.

Then there is also the small matter of what happens when the religious interpretation does not match the observed science.

Galileo ran into this problem and his story illustrates the lack of science in religion, and the refusal of religion to accept any science into the 'official' interpretation, or to make any changes to the 'official' belief systems, dogma or teachings.

People can mingle and talk with other people who believe differently and have different faiths or belief systems, where that did not happen historically, because most people lived and died in one small village, with no contact with 'outsiders'.

A VIRGIN BIRTH IS COMMON TO MANY RELIGIONS; WHAT CHANGES IF THAT IS TRUE? 

Does it really make any logical sense that Jesus was born in dirty straw, in an animal shed full of animals/animal dung, in the middle of winter (December) at the coldest time of year, with no midwife, no doctor, no electricity and no warmth of any kind? Who in his right mind would light one or more candles in the middle of a shed filled with animals and dry straw anyway? Jewish law declared that no man could be present at the birth of a child, because the woman was 'unclean'. Did Mary really give birth in the dark, in a REALLY COLD shed, no bed, with just a bunch of dirty straw, in a filthy animal waste filled place, with no one else around? Really? 

As I’ve wallowed in Christmas music the last couple of weeks, I’ve pondered the traditions of the Christmas story; and I’ve come to a conclusion.

Mary was shafted.

There she is, 8+ months pregnant, having been dragged all over Israel on the back of a fucking donkey. I know that when I was 8 months pregnant, I had a hard time riding for two hours in a car to attend my father-in-law’s funeral.

Beyond that, what was Mary using for a bed? We know all about the Little Lord Jesus being tucked away in a manger after-the-fact, but what did Mary labor upon? I doubt that the innkeeper kept a birthing stool handy, especially not in the barn, so I’m guessing our poor girl was relegated to a pile of straw. In a cow barn, full of fodder and cowshit.
