Sex education classes teaching pleasure are more effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies. study finds
Olivia Petter 13/02/2022...Sex education classes that feature discussions around pleasure and desire are more likely to reduce STDs and prevent unwanted pregnancies, new research has found.
According to an analysis of research literature from 2005 to 2020, published in the journal PLOS One, the findings suggest the need for a “rethink” as to how sex education classes are designed. They recommended reforming sex education syllabuses to ensure that sexual pleasure and desire was being adequately addressed.
The study was conducted by reviewing 33 projects targeting STI and HIV risk reduction. The found that including teachings on sexual pleasure can have “significant positive effects” on information and knowledge-based attitudes. Study co-author Anne Philpott, of The Pleasure Project, said. Click here Independent

Mum's pram 'a health and safety risk' in lift-less Auckland apartment, says building manager
Ethan Te Ora 05:00, Feb 13 2022..A West Auckland mum has been told her baby’s pram is “a potential health and safety risk” at the apartment building where she lives. The building manager has banned Emma McInnes from parking her stroller under the stairwell at the three-storey Kōkihi Apartments in Waterview.
But the apartments don’t have an elevator – nor is there ground-level storage for the likes of prams, mobility scooters, or wheelchairs. Lugging the pram up and down stairs, in the meantime, had resulted in back pain which now required weekly physiotherapy, she said.
She purchased a cheaper apartment – with no elevator access, and no storage – and is now upset because she didn't think about the consequences,” Active Building Management managing director Brady Williams said. McInnes originally sought permission from the building’s body corporate committee. Click here Stuff news

Pasifika nurse practitioner's graduation 'inspirational' to others
Sapeer Mayron 05:00, Feb 11 2022 Aotearoa has a new Pasifika nurse practitioner specialising in child health, Catherine Soana Latailakepa Tu’akalau. Tu’akalau, from Luatuanu’u in Samoa and Ma’ufanga and Kolofalahola in Tonga, is also Wellington’s first Pasifika nurse practitioner.
According to the Nursing Council of New Zealand’s latest data, Tu’akalau will join about seven other Pasifika at the highest level of nursing practice. Nurse practitioners earn tens of thousands more than registered nurses, with salaries closer to a junior doctor’s.
Tu’akalau said even if Pasifika nurses had the clinical and academic skills, some may be unaware of the job, some may be unable to access a masters’ programme, and others may be insecure about going for more responsibility at work. . Click here Stuff-news

Government announces increase to minimum wage at same rate of inflation
Zane Small 11/02/2022...The Government has announced an increase to the minimum wage from $20 per hour to $21.20 per hour, which will come into effect from April. It has increased by about 5.9 percent, matching the 5.9 percent increase in the price of goods and services in New Zealand in the last three months of 2021 compared to 2020 - the biggest jump since a 7.6 percent annual increase in 1990.
Workplace Relations Minister Michael Wood said on Friday the minimum wage rise will directly benefit about 300,000 workers. The starting-out and training minimum wage will also increase from $16 to $16.96 per hour
For someone working a 40-hour week on the minimum wage, the increase will see them earning an extra $48 a week, and almost $2500 more each year, Wood said. With the arrival of Omicron, we are once again calling on many of our frontline workers - such as cleaners, supermarket workers, and security guards. Click here News-hub

Covid-19: $38.7m in overdue MIQ bills still sought
5:31 pm Katie Todd, Managed Isolation & Quarantine Reporter..Six months after MIQ started deploying debt collectors to chase up unpaid bills, the amount owed has climbed to $38.7 million.
Half of that, some 5800 accounts, are more than 90 days overdue - and one expert believes authorities should be charging interest on them. It comes as the government considers the future of the fees scheme, and prepares for MIQ to be gradually downsized.
Figures from MBIE show the MIQ fees scheme has collected $131.7m to date - yet about one in five MIQ bills remains unpaid. That is within the government's expectations, according to a briefing given to Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins in February last year. Marshall stunner helps Warriors begin new era with win
skysports.com 12/02/2022...Two tries apiece from Jake Bibby and Liam Marshall helped Wigan Warriors get the Matt Peet era under way with a 24-10 win away to Hull Kingston Rovers in the Betfred Super League.
Bibby's two opportunist tries helped Wigan into an 18-8 lead at the break at Sewell Group Craven Park, with Jai Field crossing for one on his return after a long spell out injured and Marshall landing a sucker punch with a length-of-the-field finish on the counter-attack.
Rovers' sole score of the first 40 minutes had come on the back of a fine solo run from Mikey Lewis, but Marshall's second just after the hour proved enough to seal the win for Wigan in their opening fixture in the 2022 campaign. James Blunt offers to help NZ officials by playing his music to deter COVID protesters
UK singer James Blunt is weighing in on New Zealand's anti-COVID vaccine mandate protests and is hilariously offering to play his music to deter the demonstrators from Parliament's grounds. Social media users were amused by Blunt's response to the protests. Please come for a live concert now," one Kiwi responded.
Blunt offered to help New Zealand officials in response to a BBC article about authorities playing Barry Manilow songs on repeat in an attempt to get rid of the protesters - who are now occupying Parliament's grounds for a sixth day.
It comes after House Speaker Trevor Mallard started blasting out the Barry Manilow songs as well as Unite Against COVID-19 advertisements and the Latin hit 'Macarena' on repeat. He said while the protesters had a right to be on Parliament's grounds, they lost that right when people started disrupting, harassing and threatening Wellingtonians.. Click here News-hub

Man stabbed husband and wife to death while babysitting their young son, court told
Andy Gregory 09/02/2022...A man who had been babysitting a young child stabbed the boy’s parents to death in a “savage” attack when they returned home, a court has been told.

Mr Hibbert died as a result of 58 stab wounds and blunt force injuries, while Ms Hibbert died of multiple stab wounds and was found lying partly naked on their bed, the court heard on Tuesday.

LGBT organisations ask UN to revoke status of British rights watchdog
Meg Hill 11/02/2022...A group of 20 LGBT organisations have asked the UN to revoke the status of Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). A 19-page submission to the UN – which the groups said was prompted by the EHRC’s stance on trans rights – asks for the independent status of the EHRC to be reviewed.
“Their recent statements on GRA reform in Scotland, and the conversion therapy ban in England and Wales not only reverse their long-held positions, but are in stark contrast to international human rights standards,” the groups said.
“The EHRC’s stance seeks to strip trans people of legal protections, and pose a grave threat to the ability of trans people to participate in daily life with dignity and respect. Fox River landfill clean up finally completed at a cost of over $3m
Thousands of kilograms of rubbish were washed out to sea in 2019, when an old landfill on the banks of the Fox River became exposed during flooding. Now, three years later, the remaining rubbish has been removed from the site - at a cost of over $3 million.
Managing old landfills is complex, but a volunteer believed it's better than the alternative. Anne McDermott was one of the volunteers who helped with the clean up at Fox River. It was just devastating to see it - there was just rubbish everywhere," she said.
90 percent of it would've been plastic... I certainly wouldn't want to see it happen again, I mean, the scale of the project was huge. Hundreds of sites are thought to be at risk. Dave Bull is a contaminated land specialist at the consultancy firm HAIL Environmental who says lots of rubbish dumps are on land particularly vulnerable to erosion. Click here RNZ news

Russian Olympic teen skater Valieva tested positive for banned drug
AFP 12/02/2022...Russian skating sensation Kamila Valieva failed a drugs test in December. The 15-year-old played a starring role in helping the Russians win the figure skating team gold on Monday. On Friday, soon after she was seen practising ahead of next week's Olympics singles event, the International.
Testing Agency (ITA) publicly confirmed that her sample contained traces of the banned substance trimetazidine. Trimetazidine is a metabolic agent used to treat angina and vertigo, but it is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because it can increase blood flow efficiency and help endurance.
The ITA, which carries out drug testing at the Olympics, said the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) had suspended Valieva when it received the result but she successfully overturned the decision, enabling her to continue at the Beijing Games.. Click here AFP

Biden releases $7bn in frozen Afghan funds to split between 9/11 families and aid
Nina Lakhani and Emma Graham-Harrison 12/02/2022..Joe Biden signed an executive order Friday releasing $7bn in frozen Afghan reserves to be split between humanitarian efforts for the Afghan people and American victims of terrorism, including relatives of 9/11.
In a highly unusual move, the convoluted plan is designed to tackle a myriad of legal bottlenecks stemming from the 2001 terrorist attacks and the chaotic end of the 20-year war in Afghanistan, which ignited a humanitarian and political crisis, the New York times reports.
But critics warned that it could tip Afghanistan’s already-strained banking system over the edge into systemic failure and deepen a humanitarian crisis that has left millions facing starvation and almost the entire country – 98% – short of food. You’re talking about moving toward a total collapse of the banking system, told the New York Times. Click herre The Guardian
